Relix Review
As any solid session should, this impressive 50-minute effort delivers on the promise of catharsis.
Perfectly breezy throughout and supplemented by a solid smattering of outstanding female vocal performances by special guest Kim Dawson ("I Want You To Stay" and "Soul Sista"), The New Mastersounds once again deliver a joyous, updated personal statement while helping lead the modern-day funk landscape to new and exciting places. Known for an identifiably authentic sound, the Leeds, England band's ninth studio effort is perhaps their most unique and eclectic studio production to date. Guitarist Eddie Roberts' recent stretch as a New Orleans resident seems to have left a palpable impact on the band's sound and direction - "Monday Meters" is a brief, yet memorable touch paying homage to the forefathers of the NOLA funk scene and further proof of the legendary quartet's unquantifiable impact on this band. Running a wide gamut, Therapy provides explorations into soul-lifting jazz, enduring funk and some of the best instrumental trance heard in ages. (See "When it Rains..." driven by drummer Simon Allen's inventive fills.) Inspired by the surrounding Rocky Mountain beauty - recorded at Scanhope Sound in Littleton Colorado - and slickly produced, Therapy is a record worth checking in with again and again.
